Jais detains Islamic preacher Wan Ji for lecturing without permit


Wan Ji Wan Hussin was questioned by Selangor Islamic authorities tonight after he delivered a religious talk at a surau in Shah Alam. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, February 19, 2015.Selangor Islamic authorities tonight briefly detained controversial Muslim preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin after he delivered a religious talk without permit in Shah Alam.He was released at 10.30pm, less than an hour after he was taken away for questioning.Confirming the incident to The Malaysian Insider, Wan Ji said he had just ended his lecture at a surau in Section 17, Shah Alam, when he was detained by officers from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais)."They said I delivered a lecture without their permission," said Wan Ji.He said he was asked to return to the department's office on February 23.Wan Ji, 34, is no stranger to controversy, and was last year charged under the Sedition Act over his comments on Islam and royalty.Following this, Jais issued a circular banning him from giving talks in mosques and suraus across the state."This department prohibits Wan Ji Wan Hussin from teaching or speaking anywhere as he does not have the accreditation to teach or speak," said Jais director Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad in the letter last November. – February 19, 2015.
