Pro-Pakatan bloggers victims of selective prosecution, says lawyers’ group

Lawyers for Liberty co-founder Eric Paulsen believes bloggers aligned with Pakatan Rakyat are on Putrajaya’s hit list. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Mukhriz Hazim, January 21, 2015.Pro-Pakatan Rakyat bloggers are victims of selective prosecution, says humans rights group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), after blogger Yusuf al-Siddique Suratman was found guilty of causing fear among the public during the Sulu intrusion in Sabah last year.LFL co-founder Eric Paulsen said it is quite shocking that Yusuf, also known as Milosuam, was sentenced to two years' jail, which is the maximum sentence. "A lot of pro-Umno bloggers are free to say anything, but no legal action was taken against them. They are immune. But if you ‎are a pro-Pakatan blogger, they (the authorities) will wait for you to make a mistake and pounce on you.

"Where's the equal treatment? This is selective prosecution and smacks of double standards. The whole of Malaysia can see that," he said at a press conference at the PKR headquarters today.Yusuf  was charged in June last year under Section 505 of the Penal Code for causing fear among the people through a blog post about the security measures undertaken during the incursion.About 200 Sulu militia entered Lahad Datu to revive the sultanate's claim to Malaysia’s easternmost state on February 2013.A standoff ensued and about eight Malaysian policemen died in the incident. The country’s easternmost state is infamous for kidnappings by militants living in the southern Philippines.Yusuf had published, on his blog, a document titled "Borang Utusan Polis" under the posting "Maklumat Sulit: Pendatang Asing Bakal Cetus Huru-Hara di Sabah".The posting was made on March 6, 2013, and Yusuf was detained in Kuala Lumpur two months later. He has been granted a stay pending an appeal.Paulsen said he was surprised that Yusuf, a first time offender, was given the maximum penalty."Nowhere does the law states that a maximum sentence has to be given to a first time offender," he added. – January 21, 2015.
