One temple won’t change population into Hindus, Tengku Adnan tells Perkasa

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the construction of a Hindu temple in Putrajaya would not affect the faith of Muslims. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 17, 2015.Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today slammed Malay right-wing group Perkasa for questioning the construction of a Hindu temple in Putrajaya, saying that it will not affect the faith of Muslims staying nearby. He asked Perkasa to stop playing up the construction of Sri Lalithambikai Alayam temple and pointed out that the project had been approved a long time ago."We have built many temples before, building another one in Putrajaya is not going to change the entire population into Hindus," Adnan said after launching a new housing development in Sungai Besi this morning.Tengku Adnan said this in response to comments by Perkasa Youth chief Irwan Fahmi Ideris who was recently reported to have asked why a Hindu temple had been constructed in a Malay-majority area and suggested its entrance face Banting, where a large Hindu population lives. His remark had angered many quarters including MIC Youth, who told Irwan  off, saying that Putrajaya belonged to all Malaysians because it was the administrative capital of Malaysia.Tengku Adnan also said it was immaterial where the entrance faced and that it was not for the Perkasa leader to preach to Hindus. The minister said there were about 600 to 700 Hindus currently living in Putrajaya. He added that the new temple, which will cost about RM12 million, will feature a modern design equipped with a library and a hall that will be open for use to all."The facilities can be used by everyone, not just Hindus. Perkasa should stop making an issue out of this," he said. The construction of the temple, dubbed the “most unique temple in the country", was announced by former MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu in January 2013.It combines both northern and southern Indian elements and is expected to accommodate close to 10,000 devotees during festivities. The proposal for the project, according to news reports, was made a decade ago by Samy Vellu to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during the initial planning of the administrative capital. An acre of land was then allocated for the project as agreed on by the then-prime minister. – January 17, 2015.
